Moving tips for easy and safe storage

  1. Moving from an apartment or house is a big job! Plan ahead to make the process go more smoothly! It can help to make a list of all the items you’ll need to store with an indication of their general sizes. Be sure to have all your packing materials gathered together ahead of time: good quality corrugated cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, styrofoam peanuts, newspaper or other shock absorbing materials along with packing tape and markers. Don’t forget to have sheets or blankets to help protect surfaces of furniture and other vulnerable objects.
  2. Be sure to label all boxes with list of contents to help quickly recover any items you might need to retrieve later. Also, be sure to label fragile boxes so there are no accidents as you’re moving around boxes. It’s a good idea to keep a list of the contents of your boxes off-site as a reminder of what you have put in storage.
  3. Pack as much as you can in the same size boxes. Fill boxes tightly, but take care to neither over-pack nor under-pack. (Bulging cartons tip when stacked, while half full boxes tend to collapse). Use wadded up newsprint, bubble wrap, rags, towels, or blankets to fill in empty spaces. For maximum protection, seal cartons with tape.
  4. Keep your boxes under 30 lbs. to make moving them easier. Pack heavier items like books in smaller boxes so they don’t become too heavy.
  5. Don’t skimp on packing paper around fragile items like dishes or glassware. Wrap each item individually with extra packing paper in between.
  6. Any disassembled furniture parts should be kept together. It’s a good idea to also mark the pieces to help reassemble more quickly later. It’s best to cover mattresses with sheets or plastic to keep them clean while in storage.
  7. Before storing appliances, be sure to give them a good cleaning and dry them out thoroughly before storage. Be sure to secure anything that might move inside with tape or wedge some paper to immobilise these items. It’s a good idea to tape doors shut for transport but don’t leave them like this once they’re in storage. Instead, leave the doors ajar to prevent mildew build-up inside.
  8. Pack your books flat to avoid deforming the spines. Put some extra packing material around the books for extra protection. It’s a good idea to use plastic to help isolate the books from outside moisture.
  9. Clothes and curtains ideally are hung in wardrobe boxes.
  10. Wrap the legs of chairs with packing paper to protect them from scuffing when moving items. For upholstered chairs, it’s a good idea to cover them with plastic to protect from humidity.
  11. You can use an empty drawer inside a chest of drawers to store fragile items. It’s a good idea to add towels or other soft materials around these items for additional protection.
