Helpful Suggestions for Safe Storage

Apex Storage endeavors to serve Dryden and surrounding Central New York communities to make your use of our storage spaces as easy and efficient as possible while also endeavoring to offer the utmost protection for all your precious belongings. These storage tips can help insure that all items will be ideally protected.

  1. Place items you’ll need most frequently toward the front of your storage space.
  2. Leaving a central aisle that goes all the way to the back of your storage unit will help with access to more items.
  3. Keep all valuable papers, books and artworks off the floor to prevent damage from accumulated moisture.
  4. As you, alone, have access to your storage space, be sure to never store any explosives, flammable liquids, fuels, toxic chemicals, any perishables or living animals! To do so would be to break state laws!
  5. Remove gasoline and oil from small gas powered items (lawn mowers).
  6. Be sure to label (number?) your boxes and keep this list at home to have a record of your stored items.
  7. It’s best to lift storage containers (cardboard boxes and others) off the concrete floors. Placing boxes on top of wooden pallets can help prevent moisture problems.
  8. When storing large items such as tables and sofas, you can conserve space by removing legs and  store these vertically.
  9. Be careful of paper materials such as art works, photographs and posters which can curl as moisture levels vary throughout the year. Best to keep them flat by storing them in folders and placing some extra weight to keep all materials flat.
  10. Store appliances (refrigerator, washing machine, etc.) with doors left slightly open to avoid mildew build-up.
  11. Individually wrap your glassware and dishes with newspaper and/or styrofoam peanuts to help protect them.
  12. Cover your mattresses and store them flat to prevent them from losing their shape.
  13. For wood furniture and other delicate wood surfaces, be sure to treat these to protect them and it’s a good idea to cover them to prevent any scratching such something fall on them.
  14. Try storing your brooms, shovels, hoes, rakes and other such tools in a garbage pail to keep them in place.
  15. Protect wool clothing with moth balls!
  16. When packing fragile items in boxes, try to use extra shock absorbing materials to help protect them. Be sure to avoid storing these under other heavy boxes.
  17. Store your windows, screens, mirrors and other pieces of glass upright to protect them. It’s a good idea to also place a blanket over them for extra protection.
  18. To prevent metal items (i.e. filing cabinets) from  rusting it’s a good idea to wipe all metal surfaces with a few drops of machine oil on a rag.
  19. Be sure to use high quality locks for your storage space.
  20. Be sure to insure your valuables.
